Community Cinema

A new Community Cinema for Leigh Woods and Abbots Leigh had its opening night on 6th January 2016. The first film screened was Suite Francaise. The 2nd film screen on 2nd March was Captain Phillips. There are a number of people from both communities involved in organising and developing this facility. There is now a proposal to create a members association and the details and some background from Barry are outlined below. A membership form can be downloaded via the link. Details of future events will be announced over the coming months.

Working Committee

At the last meeting of the Steering Group we decided, in view of the number of interested residents, that we would formally create a cinema club to be called the Leigh Woods & Abbots Leigh Community Cinema.  We need to do this if we are to open a bank account and deal with outside bodies such as the church, the British Film Institute (BFI) and Long Ashton Parish Council for funding!  The first committee has met and elected a Chairman, Sonia Mills, an Honorary Secretary, Sally Sparks and an Honorary Treasurer, Barry England.  We shall hold a meeting of members shortly to confirm these elections.

Finance

For our first two showings we have been able to borrow all the equipment thanks to the good offices of Merlin Wigley.  However we do need to find a long term solution.  We could hire equipment from “Films for Us - South West,” part of the BFI but it is quite expensive, the dates will be restrictive as the equipment is used elsewhere.  Also we have to pay for the volunteers who come and set it up and operate it, which is something we can do ourselves thanks to the skill and experience of Merlin Wigley, although we do need our own volunteers who can take on this responsibility!

We have decided to buy our own equipment and we believe that over the next year or so we can fund these purchases from the net income from our showings and in the short term hire what we do not have.

To help fund the initial purchase we have developed the following tariffs which will raise some cash up front. The Membership Year will run from 1st September to 31st August.

Membership Fee -   5 per person per annum.

Season Ticket -  30 per person which will cover the Membership Fee and no less than eight showings per year.

Film Ticket – Member 5; Non-Member 7.

We need you to join as a member now!.  Please download and complete the attached membership form via this link: Community Cinema Form

and return it to:
